First commercial trial of farmed fish auction
Shetland Seafood Auctions held its first commercial trial of farmed fish today (30 August). Several remote buyers were invited to place bids for a small quantity of whole gutted salmon and fillets, supplied as catalogue items by salmon producer, Shetland Products Ltd.
The salmon was harvested on Thursday (1 September) and delivered to the UK mainland the following day.
Commenting on the success of the trial, manager of Shetland Seafood Auctions, Martin Leyland, said: "I am delighted that the initial auction trial worked so well. Since then, Shetland Products has actually increased the quantity of salmon supplied, and is now selling through the auction on a daily basis.
"I am now looking forward to developing this further, by encouraging more buyers and producers to become involved in this new process."
